One New Zealand-based blogger, Saziah Bashir, has written: "You have Muslim women talking to Facebook and Twitter and Tumblr and screaming 'Listen to me!' Saudi authorities submitted Wadjda as their first-ever entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. He has training wheels on it which makes her cry.
Wadjda: A Portrayal of Women’s Struggle in a Misogynistic Society. I learned how to drive a car and ride a bicycle at the ripe age of 28. […] equity, sponsorships, media coverage, recognition, and equal opportunity to compete in events) has long galled me. I find it somewhat troubling that Wadjda’s markers of rebelliousness are primarily associated with her exposure to Western culture, but her mother (a generation older) is a complex mix of culture and gender role compliance as well as rebelliousness: her daily work commute is three hours because her husband doesn’t want her working with men, she scolds one of her friends for not wearing a veil with her abaya, she claims Wadjda’s Western music is evil and that girls can’t ride bicycles because it will affect their childbearing abilities, she threatens frequently to marry Wadjda off, and when Wadjda must don a full abaya at the command of the school headmistress, she looks on with glowing pride as it is a treasured rite of passage. As a woman in my late 20’s, I became obsessed with learning to ride because of the freedom and exhilaration that the bicycle promised. Although she lives in a conservative world, Wadjda is fun loving, entrepreneurial and always pushing the boundaries of what she can get away with. Mostly, it leaves them in anonymity (do you know the name of the most acclaimed female cyclist in the word? The Adobe Flash Player is required for video playback. In essence, US culture is telling us that girls can’t ride bikes. From the anti-Muslim, breast-baring slogans of Femen ("topless jihad day", anyone?) Wadjda is a splendid film of notable firsts. (Wadjda is rated PG for “thematic elements, brief mild language [of which I remember none], and smoking.” These themes are handled so gently that I see this film as suitable for all ages.) However, the women in Wadjda – and the titular hero especially – are not depicted as wholly passive victims, but rather come across as striving, enterprising and possessing some agency within the constraints imposed upon them. Copyright © 1999 - 2020 GradeSaver LLC. This is a cultural symbol that women are not meant to be seen or heard in public life in Saudi Arabia. At its heart, the film is about how young Wadjda, played by newcomer Waad Mohammed, navigates her culture and adolescence as a Saudi girl, her relationships with other girls and women, and what seems to be the changing attitudes of her country (more on all that later). Director Monsour, herself, knows a thing or two about doing that which seems impossible.
Evidently, director al-Mansour shares Wadjda’s aspirations for equality for Middle Eastern women. Without being fully aware of it, Wadjda makes mischief in the hope of peace and equality. There is still a long, long way to go, but hopefully things like this pave the way for bigger changes.". The loving rapport between Wadjda and her mother, the competitive drive and occasional obnoxiousness that masks Abdullah’s crush on Wadjda, and the spare yet upbeat musical score also combine to make this a hope-filled viewing experience. All of this may sound like grim slogging, but al-Mansour wields an admirably light touch that keeps the story buoyant. Wadjda also wears brightly colored hair clips, Converse sneakers with green laces, and listens to American music. Upon meeting Harriet Beecher Stowe, writer of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Abraham Lincoln is alleged to have quipped (a tad condescendingly, methinks), “So you’re the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war.” In a similar fashion, I hope al-Mansour’s indomitable little girl can spark a similar (yet bloodless) rights revolution. The Saudi culture of women having very little to no voice in the society is represented fully in this film. Her plight is made still worse by her medical inability to bear her husband more children, especially that all-important male heir. In her home country, her work … I also got really into following professional cycling (more on that later, too…I promise it’s relevant). This shows that over the generations, Saudi women are changing, with mothers imparting traditional values to their daughters while still giving them an increasing measure of freedom and autonomy. Also, send me the Family Newsletter and special offers. All Rights Reserved. Being Seen. In one scene, as Wadjda walks home from school, she’s a vulnerable black speck on a near-empty street, while construction workers catcall their sick desire to grope her. It has brought Saudi Arabia into the spotlight at a time when there are mixed reports about the country's emerging social changes, or lack of them. Wadjda desires to purchase the green bicycle from the shop near her home. Al-Mansour’s cinematography further underscores these points, knowing precisely when to pull far back or zoom in for emphasis. But Wadjda, and the conversations around it, seem to be part of a wider debate over feminism, women's rights and the Muslim world – and it has several layers.
And of course the overriding system of subjugating women endures – a shocking reminder of that came a week ago, as two of Saudi's prominent women's right activists, Wajeha al-Huwaider and Fawzia al-Ayouni, were sentenced to 10 months in prison and a two-year travel ban, for "kidnapping" a Canadian woman (who was trying to flee an abusive marriage and reach the Canadian embassy in Riyadh). An editor This is a symbol that she believes women are meant to be seen, not to hide from men.
A Muslim herself, she has spoken in interviews of her optimism that Islam’s ossified misogyny can be remedied, despite also alluding to death threats and hostility from more extreme elements within her faith. Written by people who wish to remain anonymous. Later, when Miss Hussa squelches her cottage industry of selling soccer bracelets to her classmates, Wadjda enters a Koran-reciting competition whose prize money would allow her to grab hold of her grail. One blogger, Randa Abdel-Fattah, writes: "Ultimately, I do not see Islam as the problem; I see it as the platform for change. Most significantly, it’s the first movie completely filmed in Saudi Arabia (a country lacking movie theaters or an internal feature film industry), by the first female Saudi director. As the women sat waiting in a hot van with only their eyes visible, I realized, though, that the plight of women in Saudia Arabia isn’t that different from that of women in the US. If there is one theme in Wadjda that cannot be overstated, it’s: The personal is political. For starters, the conduct of ISIS and other Muslim terrorists competes almost daily with Ebola for top headlines, making ever timely the question of whether Islamic values can peacefully coexist with those of traditional Western humanism. Personally, though, I was intrigued by the storyline of her new-found passion and desire for a bicycle. Wadjda never once doubts that she should be able to own and ride a bike. ), Please also opt me in for Exclusive Offers from Patheos’s Partners. Since Saudi women can’t possess a driver’s license, we observe a group of burka-clad women sweltering in a van whose verbally abusive driver has thoughtlessly turned off the air conditioning. Though she had the permission of the Saudi government to make her film, she was forced to hide in a van for most of the outdoor filming, as it would be unseemly for a woman to give direction, especially to her male actors.
